Signs and Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. The signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis can vary widely depending on the affected joint(s) and the severity of the condition. Common signs and symptoms include:

  1. Joint pain: Pain in the affected joint(s) is a hallmark symptom of osteoarthritis. The pain is typically worse during or after movement and may improve with rest.
  2. Stiffness: Joint stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity, is common in osteoarthritis. Stiffness may decrease with gentle movement.
  3. Joint swelling: Swelling may occur around the affected joint due to inflammation. The joint may feel tender or warm to the touch.
  4. Decreased range of motion: Osteoarthritis can lead to a reduced range of motion in the affected joint(s), making it difficult to move the joint freely.
  5. Crepitus: Crepitus refers to a crackling or grating sensation or sound that may occur when moving the affected joint. It is caused by the roughening of the joint surfaces due to cartilage loss.
  6. Joint instability: As osteoarthritis progresses, joint instability may develop, leading to feelings of joint weakness or giving way.
  7. Muscle weakness: Weakness in the muscles surrounding the affected joint(s) may occur as a result of decreased activity due to pain and stiffness.
  8. Bone spurs: Osteoarthritis can cause the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes) around the edges of affected joints, which may contribute to joint pain and limited mobility.
  9. Joint deformity: In advanced cases of osteoarthritis, joint deformities such as bowing of the legs or changes in joint shape may occur.

It’s important to note that the symptoms of osteoarthritis can vary greatly from person to person, and not everyone with osteoarthritis will experience all of these symptoms. Additionally, the symptoms may come and go and can worsen over time. If you suspect you have osteoarthritis or are experiencing symptoms, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and management.
