What Is Aquagenic Pruritus?

Aquagenic pruritus, also known as water-induced pruritus, is a rare condition characterized by intense itching or irritation of the skin that occurs shortly after contact with water, regardless of its temperature. It is not associated with any visible skin changes or rash. The itching typically occurs on areas of the skin that come into contact with water, such as the arms, legs, chest, back, and abdomen.

The exact cause of aquagenic pruritus is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to the release of certain chemicals in the skin in response to water exposure. The condition can be triggered by various factors, including bathing, showering, swimming, sweating, or even rainwater.

Aquagenic pruritus can be extremely uncomfortable and distressing for affected individuals, but it is not usually associated with any serious health complications. Treatment options may include antihistamines, topical steroids, moisturizers, and avoidance of triggers when possible. However, the effectiveness of these treatments can vary from person to person.
