What Is an Allergy Headache?

An allergy headache is a type of headache that occurs as a result of an allergic reaction. Allergies trigger the release of histamines, which can cause inflammation and irritation in various parts of the body, including the sinuses and nasal passages. When these areas become inflamed, it can lead to congestion, pressure, and pain, often felt as a headache.

Common symptoms of an allergy headache include:

  1. Pain or pressure in the forehead, temples, or behind the eyes
  2. Sinus congestion
  3. Runny or stuffy nose
  4. Watery or itchy eyes
  5. Sneezing
  6. Fatigue

Allergy headaches can vary in severity from mild discomfort to more severe pain that interferes with daily activities. They may be triggered by various allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold, or certain foods.

Treatment for allergy headaches often involves managing the underlying allergy symptoms. This can include avoiding allergens when possible, using over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines to reduce inflammation and congestion, nasal decongestants, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to alleviate headache pain. In some cases, allergy shots or other immunotherapy treatments may be recommended for long-term management of allergies.
